Edwards Captures 15th Top-5 in the No.60 Team's Backyard

Carl Edwards, No. 60 Scotts Winterguard Ford Fusion

Dollar General 300/Charlotte, NC/October 10, 2008 - Carl Edwards - Race Recap

[CONCORD, N.C.] — Carl Edwards and the No.60 Scotts Winterguard team had some extra incentive to perform well on the team's home track at Lowe's Motor Speedway. A crowd full of family, friends, and fans set the stage for an exciting race filled with cautions, rain delays and spectacular wrecks under the lights on the 1.5-mile oval. Edwards' Ford Fusion was very fast right off the hauler. He ran in the top-5 for both practices and grabbed a 3rd place qualifying spot. Edwards finished 5th and posted his 15th top-5 and 18th top-10 of the 2008 Nationwide Series season.

The first caution of the race came out on lap 5 for an accident in turn 2. Then on lap 8 there was another accident in turn 4, but while the cars were running caution laps the rains started coming down. This caused the first red-flag delay of the race that lasted just shy of 11 minutes. Edwards maintained a spot in the top-5 for the first 80 laps, pitting twice during the cautions on laps 49 and 80. They made minor adjustments on both pit stops.

The race was red-flagged again on lap 82 for what seemed like an eternity, but in reality was only 59.27 minutes, while the rains came down. The track was dry enough to send the cars back out and green flag racing resumed on lap 88. Edwards was scored in the 8th position. The second half of the race was filled with nine more cautions for many more wrecks, but Edwards was lucky enough to avoid them all. When he did pit it was only for tires and fuel because the car was handling very well. Edwards maintained a running spot in the top-10 for the majority of the remainder of the race and was able to finish in 5th.

"If you folks are gonna fertilize your lawns this fall, use some Scotts Winterguard," stated Edwards. "They've been a good sponsor. I appreciate everybody sticking around so late tonight for the race and waiting out the rain. That's real cool for the fans to be here. I just wish we could have had more for them. I thought we had a lot better car than that, but that 18 car - that was in a different league. Clint and those guys had the save of the year right there. I was getting real excited. I thought they were gonna keep running like they were, but they did a good job and they came back. My guys did a good job too with this Scotts Winterguard Ford Fusion. I don't think anybody had anything for Kyle."

Edwards and the No. 60 team head to Texas Motor Speedway next week. Texas is one of Edwards' favorite tracks and the whole team is determined to gain more points on Clint Bowyer for the lead. They will be running the Save-A-Lot paint scheme. Edwards maintained second place, but made a huge gain in the points standings. Edwards is currently only 116 points behind Nationwide Series leader Bowyer.

Next week the No. 60 team is off, but Edwards will be running the No. 99 Office Depot Ford Fusion in Martinsville, Virginia. Edwards maintained second in the overall NASCAR Nationwide Series points standings. He is still 196 points behind the series leader Clint Bowyer. The No. 60 team will run again at Memphis on October 25, 2008 in the Citifinancial colors, while Edwards will be running back and forth to Atlanta between the Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series races. This is the last non-companion race of the 2008 season.
