Edwards fights hard for 13th Top-5 at the "Monster Mile"

[KANSAS CITY, KS.] — Carl Edwards and the No.60 Scotts Winterguard team worked on several different setups during both practices trying to figure out the right one for this 1.5-mile oval. This was Edwards' fourth NASCAR Nationwide Series start at Kansas Speedway in front of family and friends. He grew up just miles from the track and had raced in his younger years just minutes from the speedway. By finishing 4th, he claimed his 14th top-5.

Edwards started the 200 lap race from the 4th position. He advised his Scotts Winterguard team early that his car was tight as he fell back eight positions to 12th over the first 29 laps. That's when the second caution flag flew and crew chief Drew Blickensderfer advised Edwards to pit for track bar and air adjustments, fuel and four tires. The crew completed a 14.25 second stop, but then the team noticed front end damage to the front valance, causing Edwards to pit for a second time during the same caution. The team made the fix, but Edwards fell back 26 spots to 38th, setting the stage for a methodical fight through the field to get back into the top-5.

Edwards forged his way toward the front and was able to break back into the top-10 by lap 78. He never dropped back out of the top-10. On lap 92, Edwards pitted under caution for four tires and fuel in a 14.48 second stop and was able to maintain his 10th place position when racing resumed on lap 96.

On lap 150 Edwards had to pit under green from the 6th position. His crew changed four tires and added fuel, but had a right front lug nut problem which cost them valuable time during a 16.49 second pit stop and Edwards had dropped back to the 8th position. Edwards fought his way into the top-5 on lap 168 and maintained it until lap 199 when he passed Roush Fenway teammate Matt Kenseth for the 4th position.

"A good finish but not what we needed with Clint Bowyer finishing second," stated Edwards. "We fought back all day. My Scotts Winterguard team did a really good job. A couple of little things happened. The valance got broken, I guess, at the beginning - I haven't seen a picture of it or anything. We fixed that, and then we had a vibration. I thought the engine was blowing up. It ran all day. And then the tachometer needle broke, so coming off for the last pit stop, I was trying to remember back to the days when I drove my van with no speedometer, you know, I was trying to calibrate my internal speedometer. I just had a slow pit road because of that. The guys did a good job."

Next week the NASCAR Nationwide Series is off. Edwards and the No. 60 team will run next at Lowe's Motor Speedway under the lights on October 10, 2008. Edwards and the No. 60 team will be back in the Scotts Winterguard Ford Fusion. Edwards maintained the 2nd position in the Nationwide Series standings 196 points behind series leader Clint Bowyer.
